Standard Bank recommits to Local Partner sponsorship of the ICC World Twenty20 2009

ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat: “It says a lot about cricket that we can attract sponsors of this calibre”

Standard Bank will once again be a Local Partner to the ICC World Twenty20 (ICC WT20), as the second staging of the event gets underway in England from 5 – 21 June 2009.

The partnership with the International Cricket Council (ICC) reinforces Standard Bank’s association with the global event, after the bank’s successful regional sponsorship at the inaugural ICC WT20 held in South Africa in September 2007.

The 2009 sponsorship deal is in addition to Standard Bank’s existing association with the event through its sponsorship of the South African T20 team.

Standard Bank’s investment in, and innovative sponsorship of, domestic Pro20 cricket has helped to revitalise the game in South Africa. Through the staging of International Pro20 games in South Africa, Cricket South Africa (CSA) and Standard Bank have been recognised for setting marketing benchmarks for the expansion of the format globally.

When the inaugural ICC WT20 was awarded to CSA, it was widely accepted that the decision to host the prestigious international event locally was strongly influenced by the successful launch and sustained growth of Standard Bank Pro20 cricket.

Commenting on the second Local Partner agreement, Clement Motale, Director Sponsorships, Standard Bank, said: “The ICC WT20 event in 2007 proved to be one of the most exciting cricket events of all time, sparking huge interest in the format across the globe.

“We are delighted to be associated with the ICC WT20 once again as it helps strengthen our brand image and reputation in local and international markets. It also reinforces our commitment to CSA to reach new audiences through twenty-over cricket and grow the format for greater international exposure.”

The decision to partner the 2009 English edition of the ICC WT20 is also driven by the bank’s growing presence in global emerging markets, with its London-based operation an important focal point for international corporate and investment banking.

“It is very encouraging that Standard Bank has again come on board as a local partner for the ICC World Twenty20 in England. I know very well that Standard Bank has been a big supporter of cricket for a long time now and it’s great to see that partnership continue,” said ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat.

“In these challenging economic times, companies have to be extremely careful how they allocate their resources and so it is heartening that corporates view cricket as a worthwhile investment.

“It says a lot about our value that we can continue to attract sponsors of this calibre. I believe the great spirit of cricket is a major part of what makes it such a great sport and clearly our sponsors agree.

“I would like to thank Standard Bank for its continued interest in supporting cricket and it all goes towards making the ICC World Twenty20 2009 the great tournament we want it to be.”

In 2008, Standard Bank received Gold in the Sports Sponsorships, Large Budget category, at the Sunday Times/Business Times Marketing Excellence Awards for its exemplary execution, activation and leveraging of its Local Partner rights during the 2007 ICC WT20.

The ICC World Twenty20 2009 involves 12 of the top men’s teams and the top eight women’s line-ups playing at four venues – Lord’s, The Oval, Trent Bridge and Taunton – in the pinnacle of international cricketing action.

The defending men’s champion is India, which beat Pakistan in the final of the inaugural event, in South Africa in 2007. This is the first staging of the women’s tournament.
